Transformers All Hail Megatron #1

Alright I have to admit I picked this book up strictly for sentimental reasons because I looked at the cover and saw the classic transformers that I grew up with and the first page that I flipped to had the cassette tapes flying out of Sound Wave’s tape deck. I wasn’t expecting much but this book was just a lot of fun to read. They got me from the very beginning and I was hooked by the third page laughing and totally excited to get to the next page. I mean it opens up with the constructocons

The Amazing Spiderman #565

The roller coaster ride continues and this issue starts off a story arch that is definately looking more promising than the last few issues have been. This arch is called Kraven’s first hunt and knowing that Kraven is dead and has been for quite some time I was intrigued. They haven’t fully addressed the identity of the new villain she is some young Kraven esque hunter that has an unknown beef against Spiderman. My guess is that she is the original Kraven’s daughter but we shall see. The twi

Final Crisis Requiem

DC has killed off another one of its heroes and I said earlier that I was kind of ticked off when superman said that he hoped for a resurrection. I felt it cheapened J’onn’s death but I feel this issue was a wonderful way of saying goodbye to this character. It was eloquent and touching a great send off. The recap of J’onn’s life was really interesting and it was the perfect eulogy for a staple of the DC universe. Is this book a must have for the saga of the final crisis? No. Is it a great

Femme Noir: The Dark City Diaries

You know one of the things I hate most in the world is when writers don’t respect their readers. This first issue from Ape Entertainment by Christopher Mills and drawn by Horacio Ottolini had great potential and started off wonderfully but then as the mystery developed we were spoon fed the details and not allowed to discover them for ourselves. Give us some credit and trust that we will be able to pick up on the subtle clues that you leave for us just like the detective in the story does rath

Ultimate Origins #2

Last issue we saw the origin of Wolverine and Nick Fury and this issue focused on the origin of Captain America. My opinion, it was alright. I liked that they are finally starting to show the present day and how it is starting to come around but we all know the origin of Captain America and they didn’t show us anything new like they did with Fury and Wolverine. There was so much hype about this project and ti got me really excited and it is getting off to a really slow start. Here’s my fear,

Secret Invasion #4

Story and action wise this story has plateaued with this issue. Don’t get me wrong I’m not disappointed I mean it was bound to happen since the action so far has been so intense. It is also important to remember that the secret invasion title itself has been the story books filling in the whole of the Mighty and New Avengers as well as the other tie in titles. I was a little disappointed when Nick Fury said he’d done what he came to do. Apparently what he came to do was just get some key peo

Wolfskin #1

So those of you who have been watching have heard how much I love the Anna Matrix series from Warren Ellis on the Avatar label, so I picked up Wolfskin, also by Warren Ellis and on the Avatar label, hoping that it would be up to the same level of quality but I was sorely disappointed. There was graphic content that seamed to be just for the sake of graphic content. It didn’t add to the story and didn’t really feel necessary. The idea of the story was pretty good but it didn’t really flow that

Urban Myths

So to explain what is going on, Top Cow has a contest called pilot season where they release first issues of 6 titles and based on fan voting, 2 get to continue as ongoing series. This year the books are Lady Pendragon, Alibi, Genius, Twilight Guardian, The Core and Urban Myths. I’ve seen the other titles on the shelves and flipped through them but none have really spoke to me until Urban Myths. This book was just so much fun, the world that Jay Faerber and Jorge Molina have created is just s

Joker’s Asylum Penguin

This one was not as good as the last week’s joker issue but it was still an interesting read. It is I guess as close to a penguin origin as we have gotten in any recent books but as the penguin is not a very exciting villain it was not a very exciting tale. I mean let’s call these books what they are, marketing for the upcoming batman movie. I don’t think that five batman based books in the five weeks surrounding the release of the movie is a coincidence, not that I blame them. They’re also s

Batman Detective Comics #846

While this book carries the RIP logo it is related in a very indirect way to the story. It is definitely not the sequel to the last batman book. That being said it is the beginning of what looks like a great story where Hush seeing the real threat that the Black Glove is posing has stepped in to claim his place as the only one to defeat batman. Like most of the Detective Comics stories this one will deal with the characters and their psychological motivation and Hush is a great character so I

Hancock: The Movie

First off it must be said that this was a good movie. It was really entertaining, the story was great and it was a fun summer blockbuster. The twist was really good and fit the story. I do think, however that it missed an opportunity for greatness by not diving deeper into the story. The history of the characters, their relationship, and their effect on the earth could have had so much depth and the writers could have created this whole world of continuity to draw us into but didn’t. It is

DCU Online On Shazap.com

Have you wondered why your Allstar Batman and Robin has been so behind schedule and inconsistent? Well, one of the main reasons is that Jim Lee has been busy with all the art for DC’s new online game coming soon. This will be an online game in the vein of City of Heroes. The game will be produced by Sony Online Entertainment and is set to release sometime in 2009. It is reported that you will not be able to play as some of the main characters but you will be able to fight along side them, or

Wanted Movie On Shazap.com

The first thing that you have to come to terms with is that the movie is a completely different entity than the books. It does true to some of the main themes and ideas of the books but the story is completely different. There are some moments and lines that are taken directly from the books, but on the whole it takes a completely different direction. The movie starts off really good. It is entertaining and enjoyable, and the scene when he tells off his boss is one of the greatest things I’v

Batman #678 On Shazap.com

This is the second part of the RIP series and the book starts out a little weird and disconnected. Part of that is because it opens up with Robin out of uniform and he is drawn much older than we are used to seeing him so I couldn’t tell if it was Robin, Nightwing, or even Jason Todd until later on in the story. The other reason was that the majority of the issue takes place in Bruce Wayne’s hypnosis and drug induced hallucination. Being a Tim Drake fan I am stoked that Robin is the last hope

Joker’s Asylum #1 The Joker On Shazap.com

This was a great one shot. Right off the bat, on the first page the art is so creepy that the character of the joker really jumps out at you and gives you the scare that everyone else in the DCU gets when you see him. This story keeps you just as on edge as the captive studio audience and makes an interesting commentary on the reality TV in general. The next issue of this series is set to feature the Penguin, which I’m not as excited about but the quality of this book definitely gives me re

Hellboy: The Crooked Man #1 On Shazap.com

This is the first of a three part miniseries featuring our favorite demonic hero, Hellboy. If you are a fan of the character this is a great way to get ramped up for the movie coming out in a few weeks here. Like most mini series our hero is more of an observer here being drawn into the supernatural crisis of others. The art is cool and really portrays the demonic nature of the characters wells. The crooked man is especially creepy and it looks like things will really ramp up in the next two

The Dark Tower #5 On Shazap.com

Well, the series has finally come to an end, if you can call it that. It has become painfully obvious that this is not a stand alone series, nor is it truly over. For the first time in the series I felt that I was missing out by not reading the first series so that kind of sucked, plus there was no resolution. The imbecile child shows up and somehow helps Rowland to escape the grapefruit but we don’t know what happened to him and the Crimson King is still around. There was no battle; no triu

This issue appeared to be a one shot but it didn’t really say. I haven’t read any of the first run. It was an interesting idea and I was aware of it more because of Seth Greens involvement that the quality of the merit of the title itself but it seamed to do pretty well. I picked this up because I figured it would be a good way to give the crew a try, but this is not the issue to do it. Again I like the characters and the idea of it all but they were not represented well in this issue. If

After flipping through it I almost put it back but I figured I’d give it a chance because it was a light week and it was a number one but it ended up being really good. It might even be my favorite book of the week. First off it is from indi label Boom! Studios, a fairly new label but with a good number of titles out all in the early stages, you can check them out at boom (dash) studios (dot) net.
The Amazing Spiderman #564 On Shazap.com

So the cover bills this as a point of view story the likes of which we have never seen. If they mean as dull as we’ve never seen well then they are spot on but seriously we’ve all seen stories told from the point of view of a cop or a villain and done so much better. These new stories just lack the weight that they did previously. This was the most inconsequential and least impactful story that I have ever read in comics. There was no point in doing it and like Billy Madison’s rant on the ef
